Elsham Wold RAF airbase murals

Deena Robinson - 7 February 2006

I have been asked to do some research for a writer who is at present working on the biography of Albert Wainwright.

Wainwright was an artist, born in Yorkshire and eventually 'called up' at the end of WW1 and served in the Royal Flying Corps. During the intervening period between wars he illustrated many books.

At the beginning of WW2 he got a job designing murals at army camps in North Lincolnshire, one of these camps was at Elsham, which was an RAF camp of course.

The camp is now an Industrial Estate, people there have no record of any 'murals' on any walls - or at least they don't seem to know of any at the present time.

Do any of your readers have any memories, recollections or information about these murals?

Do any of them know of anyone who either worked or served at Elsham Camp?

It is a fascinating idea that the MOD would pay someone to decorate the buildings with Murals and to be honest it seems a little unlikely, so if anyone could say categorically that there were no murals at the camp I would be grateful for that information too.

I look forward to your reply.
